American Education Week

Howard County Public Schools celebrate American Education Week during the following dates - November 18th through 22nd. PMS invites parents and guardians to attend any of their student’s classes during the week to experience a day in the life of a middle school student. All visitors are asked to do the following for their American Education Week Visit.

  • Upon your arrival, please check in with the front office staff.
  • All visitors are asked to bring your I.D. with you to sign in using Lobby Guard in the front office.
  • It is helpful if you bring a copy of your student’s schedule.
  • We do ask you to refrain from taking photos or videos during your visit.
  • Please sign out using Lobby Guard at the conclusion of your visit.

We look forward to your visit during American Education Week!

Sexual Health Unit

There will be three sessions to preview sexual health unit materials during parent/teacher conferences. These sessions are not mandatory for parents/guardians to attend; instead, they are provided as an option for parents/guardians who wish to preview the material. The sexual health unit will begin in mid-December, and continue through the duration of the second quarter. During this preview, handouts and diagrams which are used during the unit will be available for your perusal, and health teachers will be available for brief questions. These previews will be available at the following times: Monday, 11/25, 6:30-7:30pm, and Tuesday, 11/26, 2:00-3:00pm, and Wednesday, 11/27, 9:00-10:00am. Please note, students should not attend this preview. There will be an additional opportunity in spring if your student does not currently have Health Education.

New Mathematical Problem Solving Instructional Seminar starting soon!

Students interested in learning about and solving logic puzzles like Sudoku, Perplexors, and who are passionate about math and working with others can sign up for this seminar with Ms. Glass. Forms are due back on November 25th!

This seminar will meet during the school day on a rotating basis.

New Intramural

WEngineer is an engineering education intramural at Patapsco Middle School through which students will engage in activities and be challenged to step outside of their comfort zone. The intramural will teach a wide variety of engineering skills, including biomedical engineering, 3D modeling, isometric sketching, and electrical engineering. This advanced intramural will also give students a head start to acquire knowledge about engineering that can be applied at high school and college levels.

There are only a few remaining spots in this program and it covers new curriculum compared to the session that was run in the spring. It runs every Tuesday after school. If you are interested in this exciting opportunity please talk to Ms. Schluter in Room B5 or email we.ngineer@yahoo.com!

From the Health Room:

We have had multiple parents call the Health Room to check on their sick child or come to the Health Room at school to pick up their sick child, when their child has not been in the Health Room at all.  Please instruct your students if they are contacting you due to an illness to please report to the Health Room for evaluation.  Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Please do not send your child to school if they have a fever. Students must be fever free for 24 hours without medication before they can return to school.

If your child is absent due to a contagious illness such as the flu, strep throat, pink eye, upper respiratory infection, or GI illness please notify the health room at 410-313-2574 or

Megan_Blouse@hcpss.org

Music Boosters

Concert Closet: The Boosters are currently collecting gently worn concert attire: long-sleeved, button-down, white oxford shirts, black dress pants, black skirts, black belts, and black dress shoes. We are especially in need of girls’ black skirts, black dress pants, and black dress shoes. Last year we helped students by giving out over 40 pieces of FREE concert attire that they can keep until they outgrow. Please send your donation to school in a bag labeled "Concert Closet." Thanks for your donations!

Winter Concert Volunteers:  Be on the lookout for a Sign-Up Genius for volunteer positions for the Band, Chorus, and Orchestra Winter Concerts.  The directors could really use your assistance to make these events smooth and successful for our young musicians.  You can volunteer for your own child's performance night or that of another group.  The Sign-Up Genius will be sent to those who registered as Volunteers through the Music Boosters next week and any remaining slots will be forwarded to all music department families the following week.

Pathways to the Future

Patapsco Middle School will be hosting our first “Pathways to the Future” on April 3, 2020.  We are looking to showcase a variety of careers and to show students that there are many paths to success. This day will be an exploration of life after high school, including professions in trades, service professions, and other careers that allow for technical training.  We will have sessions in the morning for volunteers to share their work experiences and their pathways to their career followed by lessons for students about life management training (interview skills, citizen responsibilities, dual enrollment in high school/college courses, basic budgeting skills, and etiquette/social skills).

Patapsco Middle School is searching for speakers to volunteer their time to present to groups of approximately 20 - 30 students about their path to their career.  Our hope is that speakers will be able to volunteer from approximately 8:30 am - 11:30 am.  The presentations would be between 20 - 25 minutes, and they would be repeated four times (to different groups of students).

You can choose to present for 2 sessions or 4 sessions.  1 session will be approximately a 20 minute presentation to students, with time for questions and answers.
