School Flu Clinic

Wed, 10/21/2015 - 9:08am

The FluMist Clinic at Patapsco will be held Tuesday, December 15th .  If you have not sent in your consent, please do so by December 11th.
Please notify the Health Room if your child has already received the immunization (410-313-2574).  We have the consents in the Health Room that were collected for the original November Clinic and we know that some parents have gone ahead and had their child immunized.

Important things to know about influenza ("the flu") and the FluMist manufacturing situation:

  • The flu is a serious illness. The best way to prevent the flu is through immunization.

  • If your child gets a flu vaccination or any other type of immunization between now and the school flu clinic, and you have previously consented to have your child vaccinated at school, please alert your school nurse at 410-313-2574.

  • We continue to plan for our flu clinic so, if you have not already, please return your child's flu consent form by December 11.  Having these forms will make sure we're ready for the December clinics.

In the meantime, if you have not already, please return your child's FluMist consent form by December 11.

Please be aware that the FluMist consent forms was sent home in the envelope with your child’s interim report.  If you would like your child to receive the vaccine when rescheduled, please fill out the consent form and have your student return it to their homeroom teacher ASAP.

The consent is requiring insurance information because:

  • The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires all insurance companies to pay for childhood vaccinations and NOT charge parents for a co-pay or deductible.  This means that your child will receive FluMist at no out-of-pocket cost to you.  Your insurance will be billed, which is why it’s so important that you provide your insurance information.
  • In the past, free flu vaccinations were given to all children in Howard County schools so everyone could be protected and families with insurance wouldn’t be charged a co-pay or deductible.  Now that most people have insurance (and won’t be charged a co-pay or deductible), we only ordered enough free vaccines for children who do not have insurance.

If you have private insurance or Medical Assistance (MA), it is very important that you provide all of your insurance information or the consent form.  You will not be charged a co-pay or a deductible for your child’s FluMist.  Your insurance company will be billed directly.  You will not be charged if they do not pay.

If you do not have insurance, check the box in the insurance section on the consent form and your child will receive vaccine from the small supply we have for people without insurance.  You will not be billed.

We appreciate your cooperation and thank you in advance for making sure that this change runs smoothly so all children who want to be vaccinated will be protected against the flu.
