PM KNIGHT 09-16-16
From the Principal’s Desk…
Can you believe how much has happened in the first 13 days of school? That's right; it's only been 13 days though it feels like it’s been much longer. I want you to know the students have fallen back into the routine of school like champions. Speaking of winners, thanks to all who have updated the emergency procedures and information for your student in the Family File. It is a critically important task, and we appreciate you for taking the time to complete it. With fewer than 2% left to update, we are once again leading the school district in completion rates. I fully expect to reach 100% by the middle of next week - and will happily claim bragging rights when we do. Your dedication to getting this done is reflective of our community beliefs regarding knightly behavior and our core values of consistently demonstrating our reliability, responsibility, and respectfulness. Please don’t let your update of the Family File be your last visit to Connect. The ability to check in every two or three weeks to see how well your student is progressing academically is a great way to partner with us and with your student.
Please join us on Friday, September 29th at 7:30pm for our Annual PTA Movie Night. It's great fun to pack a picnic basket, spread out a blanket, and enjoy a free movie under the stars in our playing field. This year, your students voted for a screening of classic, The Sandlot. The film is rated PG for kids aged 8 and above, and gets a ‘thumbs up’ from Parent Previews.
A huge thank you to those parents and guardians who were able to make it to our Open House and Grade Level Town Meetings held at Back to School Night on Thursday. We hope you are able to stop by during our Back to School Days next week or during American Education Week in November. Finally, we want to recognize the Howard County Police Department for helping to ensure we were able to travel to and from the event without incident. The support of our public service officials is very much appreciated.
Before I let you go, I had a conversation with a parent last evening and it’s still rattling around in my head today. This particular gentlemen reminded me through his actions that people don’t often take the time to let others know we appreciate them. What did he do? He stopped and said thank you and described why he was appreciative. It was specific, timely, and genuine feedback and it impacted me more than I would have expected. This is not a shameless plug for recognition. Rather, a suggestion that you take a minute at some point in the next few days to let someone know how they have positively impacted you. To say thank you and tell that person why what they do matters to you. We are motivated to voice our feelings of discontent immediately, but we let the positives slip from our minds: those thoughts aren’t as urgent and in some ways expected. This is an unfortunate reality we must intentionally decide to confront. Simple words of kindness and appreciation are powerful and demonstrating to our children that taking the time to share those sentiments freely is critical to the future we are leading them to create. Guess what else - it feels pretty good to let someone know they are appreciated. It’s a win-win!
Have a great weekend,

PTA Meeting October 19, 7:00pm (*new date and time) - Patapsco Media center. Everyone is welcome!
IT’S MOVIE TIME! The PTA will be hosting a Family Outdoor Movie Night on Friday, September 30, 2016 from 7:30pm-10:00pm on the P.E. field behind the school.
Students have voted and our feature presentation will be the 1993 classic “THE SANDLOT”.
The movie will start showing at dusk, typically sometime between 8:00 and 8:30pm, on a giant inflatable screen. There will be plenty of candy, soda, water and snow cones for sale (bring small bills please), but the popcorn will be FREE! Outdoor Movie Night is FREE and no registration is necessary, so bring the whole family, lawn chairs or blankets, and pack a cooler too. This is NOT a drop-off event; every child must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Restroom facilities will be available. We will have a collection box for Tissues for Teachers to collect donations of facial tissues for classrooms. We need a few parents to help sell concessions, make snow cones, monitor the cafeteria (where restrooms are located), and keep an eye on the action outside.
