From the Principal’s Desk…
Second quarter ends today. That means gradebooks are being closed and grades submitted next Monday. You can expect to see report cards in backpacks on February 3rd.
With the turn of the semester, this is also the time when we start to identify students who may be required to attend an extended school year program (aka ‘Summer School’).
There will be parent-teacher conferences this winter, but they have been moved from the familiar February window to March 9-10. We will include information for signing up to meet with teachers in mid-February.
The wonderful staff in the Health Room have reported an increase of students texting parents from bathrooms to say they don’t feel good and ask to be picked up. If you are the recipient of one of these messages, direct your student to report to the Health Room. Please do not hop in the car and come to get them. We promise, we’ll call you if that becomes necessary. Please reinforce with your student that they should go directly to the health room so they can be cared for when they do not feel well. The last thing we want is a sick child to be alone in a bathroom.
The Annual PTA Snowball will be held tonight!
Congratulations to Nora Blanco on her correct responses during the final round of the school-wide Geography Bee. All participants did a great job and we are proud of their knowledge of the world around us.
For some time now, we’ve been looking for a way to help students who need to access staff for second chance learning, to re-do or make-up assignments, or other related tasks that do not fit neatly into our scheduled day. Beginning next week, we will be implementing a new weekly schedule each Tuesday to include a period of time to meet these needs.
‘Knight Time’ will take place for thirty minutes at the beginning of the school day. Students will be able to: complete work, study, and get help from teachers. Students will use the time for: classwork, homework, studying, organizing, or reading student choice material. This will not be time for students to use electronic devices for purposes other than reading or completing school work. It is also not a time for students to socialize. So, it would be a great idea to help your student identify some choice reading material this weekend in order to ensure they can engage in sustained silent reading when they do not have school work to attend to.
In order to access extra time with teachers, students will prearrange to receive passes throughout the week prior (Tuesday - Monday). Space in some of these classes will be limited, so the earlier the student requests a pass, the better as only those with passes will be dismissed during Knight Time to work with the teacher of choice. Students who choose not to meet with a teacher that week will stay in their homeroom classes to work independently on homework, classwork, or can choose to read silently. Students are expected to follow our motto of being Reliable, Responsible, and Respectful while in Knight Time. We are really looking forward to a successful launch of this new schedule.
Enjoy your weekend,

Interested in celebrating Patapsco’s many cultures? Patapsco Middle School employs an International Liaison, Ms. Jamie Kim, who is interested in partnering with the PTA to explore ways to celebrate the diverse cultural heritages of our students and their families. Ms. Kim has already built a committee of teachers and would like to explore working with the PTA as well. The PTA is looking for interested parents to both lead and be members of a PTA International Committee. Already the PTA is exploring adding a multicultural theme to the June 2017 Beach Blast event. If this type of activity interests you, please contact the PTA Volunteer Coordinator, Erin Lanthier, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
