PM KNIGHT 03-10-17


During the month of February, our students spent time learning about various key historical individuals in honor of Black History month. Students decorated classroom doors with facts about these individuals and we hope you enjoyed seeing the featured innovators and history makers while you visited for parent conferences these last two days. Congratulations to Mrs. Moultrie, Mr. Dymek, and Mrs. Stephenson’s homerooms for their winning creations.

Congratulations to the Patapsco Middle School Concert and Chamber Orchestras on their performances at the Howard County Orchestra Adjudication and Assessment.  The Chamber Orchestra received a Superior Rating (I) at the assessment.  We are very proud of all of you!

A team of students from Patapsco Middle School recently concluded an exceptional round of competition in the ninth season of CyberPatriot – the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. The team outscored other Middle School teams registered in Maryland to take home the 2nd Place Middle School Division State Award and 8th place out of the 598 teams in the nation. Congratulations to our Cyber Knights: Andrew Lee, Abishay Reddy, Smit Shete, Pranav Bolla.

We also have some students who participated in the First Lego League Maryland State Championship in late February. As part of the White-Tailed Paradox team, Pranav Bolla and Stephen Aldred helped take home the first place first. The boys will be competing in the national championship in late April and we wish them the best of luck as they prepare for this challenge.

I know this next bit is going to sound like an odd topic as snow is currently falling and we are all watching the weather forecast to see if the predicted ‘classic’ March snowstorm comes to fruition next week, but it did reach 75 degree yesterday, so keep that in mind: I need to talk about  warm-weather attire. These past few weeks, we’ve seen some students wearing tops and bottoms that they have clearly outgrown. Here’s the thing: kids grow. It happens and nothing you do will stop that from happening. That means shorts get shorter and so do tops. As spring rolls in, please make time to empty dressers and closets and sift through the contents in order to pass down or pass on ill-fitting articles of clothing.

Eighth grade parents, please be sure to read the information below about the upcoming MISA science test administration below. We need to ensure we have stellar attendance on these particular days.  There are a number of upcoming events, like our Social Media Parent Night, included in the information below. Please take time to scroll through and learn all about these opportunities and goings on.

Finally, we’d like to thank our parent and community members who contributed to the PTA Teacher Luncheon yesterday. We are full of appreciation – literally and figuratively. Everything was delicious (but especially those peanut clusters – OMG they were divine).

Don’t forget, go to bed early and move your clock forward Saturday before you close your eyes for the night!

Maryland Integrated Science Assessment (MISA)

Maryland Integrated Science Assessment (MISA) is Maryland’s new Next Generation Science Standards-aligned standardized science assessment. MISA replaces the MSA Science and HSA Biology tests in all Maryland schools. Elementary and middle school students take the MISA in Grades 5 and 8.

Our 8th graders will sit for this years MISA test administration on March 21st & 22nd. Students will be scheduled for two sessions on both days - one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Therefore, it is imperative that you make every effort to have your child attend school, on time, for the full day on both assessment days. As always, we ask that you schedule student appointments outside of the school day, but especially on these two days.

Social Media: Info and Tutorials

Want to know how to keep your kids safe on social media? Come to Patapsco Middle School on Wednesday, March 22nd at 6:30pm. The session is designed to provide you with information regarding the use and impact of social media on our teens.  Read more.

From the Health Room:

1.  There has been an increase in the number of students carrying water bottles.  Please note that for students to carry a water bottle, there must be a Physician's Order with a start date and an end date.

2.  Parents of Sixth Graders- two additional vaccines are required for your student prior to entering seventh grade.  These are MCV4 (Meningitis) vaccine and Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) vaccine.  After receiving these vaccines, please bring an updated copy of vaccine record to the Health Room.

In preparation for the 2017-2018 school year, students have received course placement recommendations based upon multiple criteria, including classroom performance, student interest, and results on standardized measures.

Patapsco Music Boosters

Help Support the Patapsco's Music Program!  Donate to the Giving Club today!  The Giving Club is the primary funding source of the Patapsco Music Boosters.  We are currently $1,000 short of our annual goal.  Beyond the normal operating budget that funds sheet music, adjudicator scores, accompanist fees, bowties and cummerbunds, and special events, we are also looking to fund two tubas and a bass clarinet as soon as possible.  Please consider supporting the Patapsco Music Boosters through a Giving Club, and complete and return the giving club form which can be found here Thank you for your support!

Our annual 8th Grade Recital Night: "A Little Knight Music," will be held at 7pm on Wednesday, April 26th in the school's cafetorium.  All 8th grade students with a musical talent are welcome to register to perform-- first come, first served.  We are also looking to have a diverse set of musical talents and genres represented in the program.  Students can participate as soloists, in an ensemble, with parents, or with teachers (given ample notice).  This is a very memorable event for our 8th graders.  Registration forms are available outside Ms. Mills' room, D-11.

The Spring Fling Needs You!

The Patapsco PTA Spring Fling is being held at school on Friday, March 24 from 8-10pm.  There will be a DJ and dancing in the cafeteria, concessions for sale, basketball and tchoukball in the gym, and BINGO with prizes in the media center.

As always, we can’t do it without your help.  We’re especially in need of chaperones.  Please check out the volunteer sign up at  .

Tickets will be on sale for $3 (cash or check made out to Patapsco PTA) March 22-24 during all lunches.  A signed permission slip is required for ticket purchase and can be found on the PTA’s website here: permission slip.  Forms will also go home with students the week before the event.

*Parents will be called to pick up if student:  is destructive with decorations, mishandles games, shows disrespect to adult chaperones, exits the building.  Students with more than one offense will not be allowed to attend the next PTA social event.

Mt Hebron Boys Lacrosse Pasta Dinner

Come enjoy dinner with the Mount Hebron Boys Lacrosse team and join in one of the longest standing community traditions.  See both JV and Varsity boys dressed to the hilt and allow them to serve you, your family and friends a tasty meal for a good cause.

Mt Hebron HS Viking 5K and Fun Run

The Viking 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run will be held at Mount Hebron High School on April 22 at 9AM. The 5K is a cross country course around local neighborhoods and trails. There are many prize categories at many levels of experience. The race is organized by the Viking Backers, a volunteer parent group that supports all the athletics and extracurricular clubs at MHHS.  Please see the race WWW site for more information:
