From the Principal’s Desk…

Dear Patapsco Families:

The time has come!! School officially begins on Tuesday! I hope your student is as excited as we are!  Today was an amazing day because we had the opportunity to meet so many of our new Knights!! Patapsco is truly a wonderful place because of the people...the students, staff, families, and community. I am so fortunate to serve as the proud principal of Patapsco Middle!

I wanted to send this issue of Knightly News to highlight the first day of school and our upcoming Back To School Night. All of the information that is included in our Knightly News will also be posted on our website.

School starts at 8:05AM and ends at 2:50PM. The doors to the building open at 8:00AM. As in years prior, students will wait outdoors prior to the opening bell unless we experience heavy precipitation or extreme temperatures. There are multiple entrances to the building and students will enter the building by their assigned lockers. Students may enter the main lobby doors on the first day where they will be greeted by staff to assist them to find their homeroom. We highly encourage our students to take the county provided transportation. We do understand that there may be occasions when it is necessary to drive your student to school. When that happens, please follow the procedures listed below to help ensure the safety of all students during school arrival time:

  • Follow the traffic arrows at the end of the driveway to make a circular loop into the drop off area

  • Only buses, staff, and county vehicles will be permitted to enter the parking lot during drop-off and pick-up times.

  • Seek assistance from the staff member stationed by the drop off area. They will be happy to help you in any way possible.

Students in grades 7 & 8 do not need to bring a backpack on the first day since they will not be getting their lockers until later in the week. They only need a binder, paper, and pencils/pens. Students will be in an extended homeroom each day during the first week of school, where they will be receiving their schedules and housekeeping items such as county policy information, lockers, and learning about Patapsco Middle. Our staff and students will also use homeroom as an opportunity to build community, get to know each other, and build that sense of the ONE Patapsco Pride. Mrs. Harmon and I look forward to meeting every student on day one in  town hall meetings by grade level. At the town hall meetings, we will highlight what it means to be a Noble Knight under our 3 R’s (Resilient, Responsible, and Respectful) and what is most exciting about Patapsco Middle specific to their grade level (Outdoor Education, Grade-level competitions, Turkey Trot, Shakespeare Residence, etc). Our teachers have developed very engaging lessons for homeroom and their classes...they cannot wait to share them with your students!

Emergency Card Procedures with Family File

Please update before first day of school

HCPSS utilizes Family File for parents/guardians to complete emergency information. Parents/guardians must verify and/or update information for each child, and can do so by logging in to HCPSS Connect, selecting the Family File tab and then clicking on Family File. Instructions are available online.


World Language Program

We understand there have been a few questions about the World Language Program for 6th grade students. As some of you may have noticed, your student is not enrolled in a World Language class for the 2018-19 school year, despite having signed up at the Elementary level.

This year, the World Language program is not being offered for 6th grade students. In its place students will take the full complement of Related Arts Classes (Art, Music, Tech Ed, FACS, Careers, Health and PE). Students will have the option of signing up for French or Spanish this spring in preparation for their 7th grade year.

We are available to address any additional questions or concerns.

Back to School Knight

Feeding Your Crew:  Don't worry about dinner.  Before heading over to BTSN, support our school by ordering dinner from Vocelli's.  A percentage of all sales will be donated to Patapsco Middle School. So, you can leave the kids at home with a pizza and come on over!  Copy of the flyer here.

Getting Here:  Parking on school property will be limited to school staff and drivers with disabilities.  All other visitors are asked to ride a shuttle from two satellite locations: Hollifield Station Elementary and Crossroads Church of the Nazarene. Shuttles will begin running at 5:30 pm, and provide return service at the conclusion of the evening.

Accessible parking for people with disabilities and parking for staff will be available in our school lot.  Parking on campus will not be available for general parking. We ask that you support our efforts to reduce the impact of our event on the surrounding neighborhood by following these parking procedures.  Please do not park on the road or in our neighbor’s driveways. Thank you!

Schedule for the Evening: All parents and Guardians are to report to student homeroom classes for a general session, which will include a video from the Administrative Team and our PTA President. Student schedules, school map, and an agenda for the evening will be provided during Homeroom.

Following the announcements, all parents and guardians will follow their student’s schedule by going from period 1 to period 7 in seven minute class periods. Related Arts classes (World Language, Music, Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Family and Consumer Science, Art, Physical Education, Health, and Technology Education) will have an “Open House” in the cafeteria during their assigned class period. Parents and Guardians will be able to meet their “A” and “B” day Related Arts teachers during the “Open House” format.

What You Can Expect:  Attending Back to School night will allow you to visit the classrooms your son or daughter sits in on a daily basis and to greet the professionals who teach them. By attending each class, you will have the opportunity to hear from each teacher who will teach your student this year. The time is only seven minutes, which is a great way for the teacher to talk to all the parents at once. That said, we know there are staff members you would really like to have an individual conversation with. We respectfully ask that you remember this is not the time for one-on-one consultations. If you have an immediate concern, please contact the teacher directly via email or by calling them at school.

We know you are wondering if you should bring your student with you.  Space is at a premium and we get to spend every day with them. If you are able, we ask that you come to Back to School night without your child.  There will be plenty of student volunteers on hand to help you find your way around, so do not worry about needing a personal tour guide. We will be there to support you throughout the evening.


From the Health Room

We have a student with severe peanut and tree nut allergies in school. Strict avoidance of peanuts/nut products is the only way to prevent a life threatening  allergic reaction. We are asking your assistance in providing the student with a safe learning environment; please do not send in any shelled nuts to school. We appreciate your support.

Medication Forms:

Students who require medication to be administered during the school day need to have new forms completed every year. For your convenience, you can find these forms online at the HCPSS website by clicking on the link for Physician's Orders (

Immunization Requirements for 7th Graders:

The State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has issued a list of immunization requirements for students. In addition to the current requirements, students entering 7th grade on the first day of school will need to have:

-1 dose of Tdap vaccine

-1 dose of Meningococcal vaccine

If your student requires additional immunizations, parents should contact their healthcare provider as soon as possible to make and appointment. Please provide the health room with an updated copy of the immunization record. Failure to provide proof of updated immunizations by the first day of school will result in your student being excluded from school. If you have any questions, please contact, RN, at 410-313-2574.

PE Uniform

The online Patapsco Middle School PE Uniform Store has opened! Orders can be placed through September 7th. Uniforms will be shipped directly to your home. Students who do not have a school uniform will need to bring their own white or grey t-shirt and black or blue shorts/pants to wear during Physical Education class.  Read more.

Welcome Visitors

In order to ensure the safety of all students and staff, all visitors must press the buzzer located on either set of main doors to gain entry to our building.  When we greet you, please provide us with your name and the reason for your visit. We will buzz you right in and direct you to report to the main office, student services, or the health room, as indicated.  

As a gentle reminder, please remember to bring in a valid form of identification (e.g. Drivers License) if you are picking up one of our students. It's also a good idea to double check your Emergency Procedure information to ensure the list of individuals authorized to pick up your student during the school day is up to date.

Parent Volunteer Information

Thank you for your interest in volunteering within the Howard County School System! We value our volunteers and the contributions they make to our students and schools.  According to HCPSS Board Policy, all parent volunteers must complete a Confidentiality Training Course about protecting the privacy of our students, staff, and schools. After you have finished the Parent Volunteers and Confidentiality Training and completed the Certification Form, please bring both forms to the school(s) where you will be volunteering. Read more.

Students misplace an amazing amount of personal items.  Please take a moment to write your child’s name on items that he or she brings to school.  Please be aware that we donate all unclaimed items to charity on a weekly basis.


Dear Families,

We are excited to start the new school year and get our PTA membership and Donation drive kicked off that will run through October 1st this year! WE,as your PTA, hope to continue to provide the same level of support to the children, teachers and school as we did last year with our $10,000 fundraising goal again!

Please consider 1) joining the PTA and 2) giving a financial donation to help us make this goal come true! We do not "sell" anything for our budget and rely on our families generous donations!
