Dear Patapsco Families:
November is a month full of exciting learning and activities. Please follow the Knightly News, calendar, and information on the Patapsco website to see all of the events and activities that are coming in the next few weeks. Some of the highlights are: American Education Week, Parent-Teacher conferences, Turkey Trot, canned food drive, Faire Day, etc.
Report cards from quarter one will go home on November 14. This is a great time to discuss your student’s progress and goals. It is also a good time to schedule parent-teacher conferences to discuss progress with your student’s teachers. The window to schedule conferences closes on November 15.
Next week is American Education Week—November 12-16, 2018. This week is a perfect opportunity for families to celebrate public education and our OnePatapsco. We welcome all families to join us at Patapsco Middle School to visit your student’s classes. Please be sure to bring an ID with you and check in with the front office. In addition, we will have a special “Coffee and Chat” with the Administrative Team (Ms. Reid and Mr. Babe) in the media center on Wednesday, November 14 from 8:00-9:00 AM. Feel free to stop by for a cup of coffee before visiting some classes. That same evening, we will have our next PTA meeting at 7 PM in the media center.
We also want to recognize all of our Veterans in the Patapsco community. November 11 is designated as Veterans Day in the United States of America. Originally known as Armistice Day in recognition of the end of World War I on November 11, 1918, this special day was renamed in 1954 to honor all of our veterans.
At this time we are reminded of the sacrifices that our veterans have made in order to preserve the freedoms that we all cherish. Their sacrifices include separation from loved ones, long stays in unfamiliar places, being put in harm's way, and for some, perishing on the battle lines defending the United States and democratic freedoms around the world.
We salute Mr. White from the Patapsco Staff... who served in the Air Force. We also want to express our appreciation to all of the Patapsco Middle families and community members who have served with in of our military branches. Thank you for all that you have done ... your service to our country is truly appreciated.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. We hope to see you during American Education Week, Parent-Teacher conferences, Music Boosters Meeting, or the next PTA meeting.

Parent-teacher conference sign-up windows opened November 7th. From Wednesday, November 7th, 8:30 AM through Thursday, November 15th, 12 PM, parents/guardians can log into HCPSS Connect to view and select available time slots to meet with teachers.
The purpose of this conference window is to allow parents/guardians the opportunity for a quick meet and greet with staff to discuss general student progress. Accordingly, each conference slot is ten minutes long. If you have a pressing concern, you are strongly encouraged to contact the teacher to discuss it outside of the conference window. Synergy Conference Management allows users to schedule time with individual teachers. When creating your schedule, be certain to build in travel time from one conference to the next, as it is important to stay on schedule. We do not recommend scheduling your conferences back-to-back as you will lose meeting time while traveling from one classroom to the next.
For step by step directions, please refer to the video or document. We look forward to seeing you during conference week. Should you have any questions or require assistance scheduling your appointments during the scheduling window, please contact Vanessa Hooks, Student Services Secretary, by calling 410-313-2850 or via email at Vanessa_Hooks@hcpss.org. For questions about availability or course specific questions, please contact the teacher directly.
Patapsco Schoolwide Turkey Trot and Food Bank Donations
From the PE Department:
Patapsco Middle School is gearing up for our annual SCHOOLWIDE Turkey Trot. The race is Monday, November 19th (inclement weather will result in event cancelation) from 8:30 am - 10:00 am and will include a 1.3 mile course that goes through the neighborhood. All grade levels will participate in the run. Volunteers and staff members, along with the Howard County Police Department will be supervising the event to ensure safety of participants as we run through the community roads. We need volunteers to chaperone students on the course and to time at the finish line, sign up to volunteer.
Additionally, in the season of sharing, we will be collecting food donations in partnership with the Howard County Food Bank. Please remember we can't distribute expired food. Some eligible items: canned meat, canned vegetables, soup, pasta, baby food, canned & dried fruit, pasta sauce, cereal, rice, fruit boxes. Students should place their food donations in their Social Studies classroom. We are doing this as a grade-level competition. So far, 7th grade is leading the way!
As always, thank you in advance for your support. Have a wonderful holiday season!

On Tuesday, November 20, students will have the opportunity to participate in the Patapsco Faire. A yearly event, the Patapsco Faire promotes community and celebrates the culmination and successes of the first quarter. For a portion of the day, students will select activities to participate in such as board games, movies, sports, knitting, origami, chess, computers, reading, etc. In addition, this year, we will have three activities that students can “purchase” entry into with their Sir Prize dollars. These activities are making a solar car with Mr. Eyes, making cookies with Mrs. Humm, and badminton with the PE staff. We are looking forward to an exciting day at Patapsco where our students are able to build relationships with one another and staff members outside of the traditional classroom.
Tuesday, December, 4, 2018 students will take a trip to Goucher College.
Please look for permission forms that have been distributed to your student for our 7th grade trip to Goucher College's Chamber Theater Productions. The students will view five plays read in ELA classes. Please make sure your student has a good breakfast as we will be eating a later lunch when we return to school.

There will be three sessions to preview sexual health materials during parent/teacher conferences. These sessions are not mandatory for parents/guardians to attend; instead, they are provided as an option for parents/guardians who wish to preview the material. The sexual health unit will begin in mid-late December, and continue through the duration of the second quarter. During this preview, handouts and diagrams which are used during the unit will be available for your perusal, and health teachers will be available for brief questions. These previews will be available at the following times: Monday, 11/19, 1:30-2:30 PM, Tuesday, 11/20, 5:30-6:30 PM, and Wednesday, 11/21, 9:00-10:00 AM.
