From the Principal’s Desk…

Today marks the last regular issue of the Patapsco Knight for this school year. I want to thank each of you for your partnership in the education of our students this year. We can’t do this job without your help and support.

As a staff, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our PTA Executive Board for doing such an outstanding job of supporting our students and staff. We are very grateful for all that the PTA does to support our students and staff. Thanks in advance to all parents who are able to come out and support our annual Beach Blast event on Friday, June 9. We are still in need of volunteers for this school tradition to take place. This is not a ‘drop and go’ event, so if you’re going to be here anyway, it’d be great if you could help ‘secure the perimeter’. Please read on and volunteer if you are able. You won’t regret it!

Congratulations to the following staff on reaching milestone years of service: 15 years - Deb Hess, Karen Harman, and Julie Mills; and 30 years - Kathy Ivey and Sherri Ross. We would also like to congratulate Mr. Bill Kenney as he prepares to embark on life as a retired educator. We appreciate his time here at Patapsco and his contribution toward helping shape our Knights.

To our eighth grade parents, we extend our best wishes for continued success as your child takes the next steps in their educational journey. On behalf of our entire staff, it has been a pleasure to work with this year’s graduating class. We look forward to hearing about future accolades and accomplishments as we are certain there will be many. No matter where your adventures take you, we want parents, students, and families alike to remember: Once a Knight, always a Knight!

As we begin to wrap up the school year, please be aware of the following information:

  • Report cards will be mailed home by June 16.

  • Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth graders who have not returned their textbooks or have outstanding fines at the end of the school year, will not receive their final report card in the mail. You will be able to pick it up from our main office.

  • Textbooks, Media Center resources, and any other school materials borrowed by your child this year need to be returned in good condition. Media books were due on May 26. Textbooks will be collected following final exams or as directed by classroom teachers: some of these have already been collected. Please make sure your student finds and returns any material still lying around your home. If you already know the book is damaged, contact the classroom teacher for replacement costs.

  • Any eighth grader who has not returned their borrowed Patapsco materials, or has not paid their outstanding school obligations, may not be permitted to attend end of year Eighth Grade activities.

  • Lockers will be cleaned out next week and students will not be allowed to use their locker after June 12.

  • Beginning June 12, students should only bring a pen or pencil to school. Backpacks should not be carried on the last three days of school.

  • Supply lists for the 2017/2018 school year will be posted on the website by June 23.

  • Lunch shifts on June 13 and 14 will be abbreviated. Only those students who will be eating a school prepared lunch will go to the cafeteria. Read on for more information.

  • Yearbooks will be distributed on June 13.

  • The school calendar for the 2017/2018 school year will be added to our Google Calendar by the end of June for those of you who like to plan ahead. While some dates are subject to change, we ask you to keep in mind vacations should not be scheduled until after the last planned inclement make-up day of the school year which will be June 18, 2018.  You should also keep in mind that next year, Presidents Day (Monday, February 19) and Monday April 4-6 (part of Spring Break) are set aside as Inclement Weather Make-up Days and students may be required to attend school on those dates.

One last thing, in addition to the Beach Blast, we will be putting on our final concert series of the school year on Monday (Chorus/Orchestra) and Tuesday (Band) of next week. Please say you’ll come and enjoy some free entertainment. Our students and staff have worked their hearts out and are ready to put that hard work on display for your pleasure. The concerts will be held at Mt. Hebron High School in the Auditorium.

Early Dismissal Lunch Procedure

On June 13 and 14, only those students who will be eating a school provided lunch will be invited to the cafeteria for lunch. Our experience has been that, on early dismissal days, the lunch period occurs very early and most students wait until they get home to eat because they simply are not hungry. If your son or daughter has particular dietary needs that must be met during school hours, and they will not be eating a school provided meal, please contact the Health Room (410-313-2850) or your son or daughter's school counselor.

Note From the Health Room For Parents of Sixth Graders:

Please don't wait until the last minute! Vaccines must be updated by the first day of the 2017-18 school year or your 7th grade student will be sent home from school until the vaccines are up to date. Read more.

Parents of Sixth Graders- TWO additional vaccines are required for your student prior to entering seventh grade.  These are MCV4 (Meningitis) vaccine and Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) vaccine.  After receiving these vaccines, please bring an updated copy of vaccine record to the Health Room.

For 8th grade Parents/Guardians

The 8th grade Promotion Ceremony is scheduled for the morning of Monday, June 12th. Due to the space limitations of the MHHS auditorium, each student will receive two tickets to the event. The annual 8th grade Celebration will be held at Patapsco on the same date in the the afternoon. For more information, please visit our website.


8th Grade Dance

Please view the sign up below regarding the 8th grade dance following the promotion ceremony.  We need many more parents to volunteer and to bring in food items.  We’d like for the dance to be fun and enjoyable for the students, to celebrate their journey through middle school.  Sign up as soon as possible to ensure proper planning.


Mt. Hebron Spirit Wear

Mt. Hebron Spirit Wear will be available in the Auditorium Lobby on June 5 & 6 prior to the concerts and on June 12 before and after the 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony.

Reminder of Upcoming Events:

6/5/17:  Spring Concert at Mt. Hebron HS, Mandatory.  Chamber Singers and Treble Chorus report to the MHHS Chorus Room for attendance at 6:30 pm: 8th graders will get recognition ribbons.  6th Grade Chorus members report to the MHHS Auditorium for attendance at 6:45 pm.

6/5/17:  Spring Concert at Mt. Hebron HS Orchestra reports to MHHS Band room at 6:15 pm.

6/6/17:  Band Spring Concert at Mt. Hebron HS Band reports to MHHS Band room at 6:30 pm.

Concert Attire

We can't wait to see you at the Spring Concert Series on June 5th and 6th!

If you notice that your child's concert attire is getting a little snug, please consider donating it after the concert to the PMS Concert Attire Closet.  We are accepting gently used "white, collared, button-down, long-sleeved oxford shirts," black dress pants and skirts, black dress shoes, and black belts.  We will also accept donations of new clothing or monetary donations.  Clothes from the Concert Attire closet were given or loaned to over 30 students this school year.  We thank you so much for your support of our performing musicians!  Please send all donations to the Front Office in a bag or envelope marked "Music Boosters--Concert Closet."

Staff Luncheon

We made it! Summer break will be starting shortly. The PTA will be providing lunch for the staff on June 13th. Please consider donating a dessert to complement their lunch.


BEACH BLAST  Friday, June 9th, 6:00-8:00 pm

Please join us for the BEACH BLAST party on the blacktop and the ball fields behind the school to kick off summer and celebrate the end of a great school year!   The BEACH BLAST is open to rising 6th graders of our feeder schools (SJLES/Waverly/Hollifield) through graduating 8th graders and their families.  Read more.



Iksan Summer Cultural Exchange Program 2017

HCPSS has hosted middle school students from the Iksan School District of South Korea for nine years.  20 middle school students, who have been selected through an arduous process, will arrive on Sunday, July 9th and will depart on Saturday, July 29, 2017. Read more.
