From the Principal’s Desk…

So, you’ve already heard the news by now. I purposefully waited to send anything out until today just in case the Board members decided not to approve the proposed use of dates. But, here we are. I know this may be old news for many of you, but it bears repeating:

  • Schools now will be in session on April 4, 5, and 6.
  • Friday, May 18 will now be a half day for students. The planned band trip will still occur.
  • If schools are closed for one additional inclement weather day, June 15 will be used.
  • If additional inclement weather closings become necessary, HCPSS will petition the Maryland State Department of Education for a waiver of the additional days.

Additionally, the weather seems to have targeted ‘B’ days. Therefore, the school system has made adjustments to our A/B rotation. Those adjustments are as follows:

  • February 20 will be changed from an A to a B day
  • April 4 will be B
  • April 5 will be A
  • May 18 will be B and
  • if school is in session on June 15, that day will a B day.

As always, we require a written note from a parent/guardian within two school days of the absence, or the missed days will be recorded as unexcused. A parent may exercise their discretion to request student absences up to three (3) days per school year. The school’s obligation is to encourage good attendance and to inform the student and family of the anticipated consequences of absences due to personal or family business. Class periods or school days missed can never be fully recovered. Therefore, the school encourages scheduling these activities at times that will not require absence from school. Discretionary/Extended absence forms are available in Student Services as well as on our website and should be submitted at least two weeks in advance of planned absences. All work provided prior to the absence is to be turned in upon the student’s return to school.

Hoping you find fun this weekend,

Cindy Dillon

2017-2018 Calendar Update

Due to inclement weather days used, schools will now be in session April 4, 5, 6 and for a half-day May 18. Learn more.

Updated A/B Schedule Information

Due to the fact that we have missed 4 B days and had an additional shortened B day for unscheduled early dismissal as of February 7, 2018, and in preparation for all possible inclement weather make-up days, HCPSS have made the following adjustments and updates to the A day/B day calendar for the remainder of this school year.

·      Tuesday, February 20 will be changed from an A day to a B day

·      Wednesday, April 4 will be a B day

·      Thursday, April 5 will be an A day

·      Friday, April 6 will be a B day

·      Friday, May 18 will be a B day

·      If Friday, June 15 is used as an inclement weather make-up day, it will be a B day

Fun Knight Coordinator Position Open!

The current Fun Knight Coordinator is graduating out of Patapsco Middle School this year so the PTA is looking for someone new to coordinate these fun social events for the kids for the 2018-2019 school year.  This is a great job for friends to share also.  Caroline Bodziak, the outgoing coordinator, has all of her records on a thumb drive to give to the new team.  Please email her at if you have questions about this volunteer position, or contact PTA President, Cherrie Webb, at to throw your hat in the ring.  If you are thinking about it, it's not too late to shadow Caroline for the final Fun Knight of the year on March 23.

Diversity and Inclusion Survey

A PTA Council of Howard County (PTACHC) survey in November 2017 showed a desire to make county PTAs’ leadership and membership more reflective of the school communities they serve.  PTACHC asked Dr. Kevin Gilbert, Director of the HCPSS Office of Inclusion, Diversity and Community Outreach for help.  The hope is that his office can help support an initiative to form diversity/inclusion/outreach committees at every school.  Read more.
