From the Principal’s Desk…
Each year, during the annual Spelling Bee, I am reminded of how difficult the English language is. I am also reminded of how astounding our students are. During the bee, we chewed through 205 words before we were finally able to announce a winner. Congratulations to Holden Justice on his impressive win and to Yash Bajaj for finishing as first runner-up. We are really looking forward to the Geography Bee later this month.
On Tuesday, we met with the parents of our incoming 6th grade class and would like to formally welcome them to our Patapsco Middle School family. As we prepare for the arrival of our new students, we are also beginning the bittersweet process of preparing to send our eighth grade class off to high school. Course recommendations forms went home with your student and should be returned no later than Friday, January 20th.
As we prepare for what promises to be a messy weekend, I want to remind everyone that February 20th (Presidents’ Day) and April 17th (Easter Monday) have both been designated as possible inclement weather make-up days. What this means is that the school system may decide to have students report to school on these days should we have a school cancellation prior to those dates. Please keep this in mind as we move into what is typically our period of more severe weather. While we will certainly inform you if that becomes the case, I want you to be clear about the possibility in advance. Further, please keep in mind that the last possible day of school can be anywhere from June 13 - June 20 and is dependent upon weather closures. Let’s just hope Mother Nature continues to send the bad weather our way on weekends! Wouldn’t that be convenient? For more on school closings, click on the link in our list of news items below.
Finally, the annual PTA Snowball is coming up in a few weeks. This year, it will be on Thursday, January 26th. We sure hope to see a lot of our students there and want to thank those parents who have already pledge to volunteer their time a huge thank you.
Stay safe out there: ice is no joke!

Patapsco Middle School employs an International Liaison, Ms. Jamie Kim, who is interested in partnering with the PTA to explore ways to celebrate the diverse cultural heritages of our students and their families. Ms. Kim has already built a committee of teachers and would like to explore working with the PTA as well. The PTA is looking for interested parents to both lead and be members of a PTA International Committee. Already the PTA is exploring adding a multicultural theme to the June 2017 Beach Blast event.
