PM KNIGHT 02-26-16
From the Principal’s Desk…
For those of you who have not been tracking our use of Inclement Weather Days, we have used eight to date: that’s two more than the approved calendar planned for. So, without a doubt, our last scheduled day of school will be Thursday, June 16th. It’s too soon to tell if we will have to close for more days in the coming months, and we will not know if June 17th might be added as a makeup day in the final analysis. Therefore, I advise against scheduling any summer holidays until after the 17th; especially if you have kids in high school because exams can be and are scheduled through the very last scheduled day of school. For those who want an update on how many days are left in the 180 day school year, assuming we make up all eight missed days, it’s seventy-two. 72! Can you believe that?!
School closures and delays over the last month have impacted more than the movement of the last day of school. We’ve only held school on 28 days since returning from winter break. Accordingly, you may notice there are a limited number of grades for some of the classes your student began at the start of the second semester. I raise this to your attention because teachers will soon begin to calculate interim grades for progress reports due to be sent home on March 11th. This dearth of grades often presents a skewed picture of student progress. So, as you review grades on Canvas this weekend with your student, keep in mind that over the next month, many more assignments will be added and thus, will change the grade average for those classes. If you have a question or concern about a particular class, do not hesitate to reach out to the staff.
There is so much scheduled during the next 72 school days. Before spring break, 8th graders will sit for the MSA Science exam on March 8-9th. Please make sure your 8th grader is in school on those two days to avoid having to schedule make-up tests. I also ask that you check your calendars to ensure you have not scheduled any avoidable absences during the weeks of May 2nd and May 9th. These are the weeks we will be administering the PARCC exams. All grades will test during the test window. If you’ve inadvertently scheduled a orthodontist visit or a physical exam during this window, there is plenty of time to reschedule. Thanks in advance for taking care of that for us. If you have questions or other conflicts, contact the counselor assigned to your student now as we may be able to make adjustments to our scheduling to help. Finally, why not take a moment to click on the link below to visit the school calendar so you can join us for events that interest you and your family? We love to see you at as many events as you can fit into your busy schedules.
Enjoy the temperate weather this weekend. Who knows what next week will bring!
