8th Grade Promotion Ceremony Details

With mixed emotion, we look forward to celebrating the successful conclusion of the middle school experience with our eighth grade class. As we prepare for the Promotion Ceremony planned for Wednesday, June 15th at the Mt. Hebron High School Auditorium, there is some information we’d like share with you in regard to dress, attendance, and procedures.

Tickets and a program will be sent home with your student on Tuesday, June 14th. Please be sure to check the backpack for these documents. Tickets are numbered and Mrs. Best will be on hand to help if you lose or do not receive yours. The auditorium seats 742 and we need to accommodate 760 people. In compliance with regulations set by the Office of the Fire Marshall, we are able to add some folding chairs to the space, but not enough to permit more than two people per family to attend.  If you are aware that your family will not be using both of your tickets, please let us know as soon as you are able. There are some families with special circumstance who could benefit from your ability to share. Please contact Mrs. Salsman ASAP regarding additional tickets.  Each family will receive one printed program. When it is finished, it will be posted below prior to the event and you will be able to print additional copies as desired.

As you prepare for the final stretch of middle school for your 8th grader, please keep in mind the celebratory activities we have planned. On Wednesday, June 15th beyond Promotion Ceremony (not a graduation) there will be a dance. In order to ensure a smooth day for students, parents, and staff, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Both of these are school events and school appropriate attire is expected. [For full guidelines, read on!]
  • Typically, what is worn to the Promotion Ceremony will be appropriate for the Dance.
  • The Promotion Ceremony will be held at Mt. Hebron High School auditorium.  As explained above, seating at the facility is limited. Therefore, each family will receive two tickets.   • We are aware there is a community sponsored party at the North St. John's Lane Swim and Tennis Club.  Any questions about that event should be directed to the parent sponsors of that event. 

POLICIES AND GUIDELINES

ATTIRE:

The Eighth Grade Celebration and Dance are scheduled for Wednesday, June 15, 2016.  Attire should be ‘Dressy Casual.’ Although these are social activities, we still regard them as teaching and learning experiences. We want our students to recognize the following: fashions that are ‘in’ may not always be appropriate.  Appropriate attire is determined by the occasion and the time of day it is to occur.  Please understand that the HCPSS Dress Code is enforced at all school events.

Guidelines for Females

  • A dress or pant suit that may be worn to a house of worship, a nice restaurant, or a special occasion is suitable. It may have long or short sleeves. The neckline should not be too low, nor the hemline too high. The skirt or the dress should be full enough for climbing over a cafeteria bench without exposing undergarments.
  • Shoes should have low or medium heels. If heels are too high, they will be uncomfortable, since they are not worn often. New shoes should be ‘broken in.’ Shoes must be worn during the entire event.
  • If you have purchased your daughter’s dress, and it has a very low neckline or spaghetti straps, she should wear a jacket or sweater with the dress for the entire event.  Shoulder straps should be at least one inch wide.
  • Consider the fact that the stage is elevated. Dresses with short hems may reveal more than intended when audience members are looking up at the young lady.

Guidelines for Males

  • Dress slacks or khakis are appropriate for boys.
  • Shirts can be button-down, open-collar, or polo styles.
  • Jacket and/or tie are optional.

Inappropirate Choices

Girls

  • Semi-formal or formal dresses
  • Dresses with very low necklines or that show midriff
  • Very short or tight dresses
  • Strapless dresses
  • Shoulder straps less than one inch
  • Short-shorts rolled up

Boys

  • A tuxedo or other formal attire
  • Jeans
  • Tennis shoes
  • Tee-shirts
  • Shorts

 

ATTENDANCE:

The following policy applies to all events during and after school hours.

1.  HCPSS policy PR-2050 defines absences as:

a. Full Day Absent: A student is counted absent for a full day if the student is present for less than one hour of the school day.

b. Full Day Present: A student is counted present for a full day if the student is absent for less than one hour of the school day.

c. Half Day Present: A student will be credited with a half-day present if the student attends an hour or more of the school day, and/or is absent an hour or more of the school day.

2. Students should be in the building and accounted for by 8:00 AM in order to participate in the event.

3. Any student tardy to school without a physician’s note will be considered unexcused.

4. The Celebration Ceremony is considered a fieldtrip.  As such, students must attend Homeroom, and ride the bus to and from Mt. Hebron in order to participate in the ceremony.

5. Students should come to school dressed appropriately for the event.

Please note that these guidelines will be enforced during all end of year activities for the 8th grade.
